Southbridge locked up the Murray Cooper Shield on Sunday with a 22-13 win over Prebbleton. Bid to solve illegal rubbish dumping is looking at its rubbish provision to make disposal easier for the community. In the past 12 months. 324 service requests for roadside rubbish/street cleaning have been made. But the district council’s roading engineer Mark Chamberlain said while not all of these reports were related to fly-tipping. “People that dump rubbish on roadsides don’t care what effect it has on the environment or on the Selwyn community...its very difficult to find those who illegally dump rubbish as it often occurs at night,” he said.
Most recently, a large pile of rubbish containing glass, concrete, buckets, household waste, underfloor matting and carpet was found on Finlays Rd in West Melton. The rubbish has since been cleaned up. The new rubbish survey released targets improving the disposal of rubbish for residents living in off-route rural areas to prevent future illegal rubbish dumpings. As a result of the survey, Darfield and Leeston have been identified as areas in need of recycling stations for properties
living away from the rubbish collection route. It showed nearly 170 rural residents would like to see more 24/7 drop-off facilities for disposing rubbish. About 90 residents would like to see more drop-off points closer to their home on a refuse collection route. Highest cause of frustrations was the kerbside collections and recycling/recovery parks being too far away. The district council’s solid waste manager Andrew Boyd said 92 per cent of households have access to kerbside wheelie bin services.
He said solutions to the problem include garden waste and scrap metal community days in Malvern and Leeston. The rubbish survey showed the most common ways for the disposal of off-route rubbish was burning it (35 per cent), using a private contractor’s bin (34 per cent) and taking it to a kerbside/drop off point (28 per cent). The district council want people to report and record the number plate of any vehicle involved in illegal dumpings. It comes after several incidents of what is known as fly-tipping in the past month. THERE’S GOOD things on the horizon for the Leeston area, and wider district in general. On page 7 today, we outline the Ellesmere Heritage Park Trust’s vision to promote tourism in the district, which apart from the skifields and a few other things is fairly skinny. It hasn’t happened overnight, though – the vision has been six years in the making. Let’s hope it doesn’t take that long to get the vision off the ground. Speaking of new things The Black Door Bar and Eatery has opened in Lincoln. Word on the street in Lincoln is it’s good. The beer’s reasonably priced, the food is very good and the staff are fantastic, according to some of the boys who went in on Friday and Saturday night. - Barry Clarke

Back to normal after massive rainfall A Civil Defence state of emergency has been lifted for the district following the wild weather which raged across the area at the weekend. Georgia O’Connor-Harding reports RESIDENTS FROM Selwyn Huts and Chamberlains Ford were evacuated, while residents north of Coes Ford selfevacuated. The Leeston Volunteer Fire Brigade had about 10 weather-related call-outs over the weekend. Chief fire officer Lloyd Clausen said everything has basically gone back to normal. “We evacuated two people out of Chamberlains Ford, with a four-wheel-drive tractor. The water was about waste deep,” he said. The brigade also did sand-bagging around Leeston and Doyleston and assisted with evacuating residents from Selwyn Huts along with the Lincoln Volunteer Fire Brigade. Lincoln chief fire officer Jeremy Greenwood said the Selwyn River breached the stock-banks making it difficult for services to

access the huts and army trucks were called into assist. Sheffield chief fire officer Neville Croy said the area got off very lightly and the brigade was not called to assist Darfield or Springfield. Meanwhile, tensions have risen after the district council shut off Springfield’s potable water sup-
ply from Saturday 10pm to 9am Sunday morning due to high turbidity conditions. A water tanker was sent to the Springfield Community Centre and was still there yesterday. A precautionary boil water notice remains in place for properties connected to the Springfield water supply until further notice.

Tai Tapu toilet sign woes solved By Georgia O’Connor-Harding TRYING TO find the public toilets in the Tai Tapu township may no longer be a mission for people travelling through the area. The district council will install a new sign at the intersection of Rhodes Rd and Old Tai Tapu Rd cleary directing people to the Rhodes Domain toilets. The Selwyn Times reported last week the trouble was due to a toilet sign being located on State Highway 75 at the intersection of Old Tai Tapu Rd and Lincoln Tai Tapu Rd. But the sign is located about 1.6km from the toilets and no

there was no sign in place at the domain. Tai Tapu Library chairman Robert White said while it was good a new sign was being installed, he could not understand the district council did not put the words “the toilets are at the domain” on State Highway 75. “It is a fair way around for people to travel until they get to the next sign . . . any way I don’t know,” he said. Gun sparks call out to uni By Julia Evans A FIREARM left in the back of a car after a hunting trip sparked a police call out to Lincoln University. Just after noon yesterday, police went to the university after someone spotted a gun in the back of a vehicle parked in the car park.

But sinister intentions were quickly ruled out. Police found the owner had recently been on a hunting trip and had failed to properly secure the gun after the trip. A police spokeswoman said police had seized the gun and were speaking to the owner.

Tourism boost aim of heritage park By Georgia O’Connor-Harding THE VISION for a major overhaul to fast-track Ellesmere into a tourist destination has been revealed. The plans, presented by the Ellesmere Heritage Park Trust at a district council meeting, have been more than six years in the making. The presentation was made by trust chairman Chris Peacock and Geraint Howells, of Include Ltd, who helped produce the plans. “If you want tourists, you are going to have to provide quality tourist destinations,” Mr Howells said. The plans centre around transforming a former district council workshop yard into a cultural and heritage park. A museum, two exhibition spaces, multiple heritage buildings and a community centre with a theatre have been earmarked for the site on Leeston Rd, bordering the Ellesmere A & P Showgrounds. The plan is to earthquakestrengthen the old workshop shed and convert it into a museum to display more than 7000 of the trust’s artefacts. A building permit is being sought for the trust’s historic cot-

The trust hopes to source other heritage buildings from around Selwyn for the site. Plans have also been pitched to include a potential campervan/ camp site, an i-SITE visitor information centre, store shed,
picnic area, playground and bicycle hire. It is estimated the entire heritage park site project would cost about $600,000. Trust member Grant Clausen said the project will be a catalyst for improving tourism in the area.

But he said the plans were only a vision at this stage and were yet to be finalised. With an emphasis on bringing more tourists into the area, additional ideas for a heritage trail, horse trekking and walking tracks have been put forward. The heritage trail would run
from Akaroa to Timaru, while horse trekking, cycle and walking tracks could be established around Lake Ellesmere/Te Waihora. Mr Clausen said the lake has two bird sanctuaries and, in spite of algal bloom, still has eels, trout and flounder living in Pat it. While Mr ClausMcEvedy en did not wish to say how much had been fundraised, the trust has raised enough to undertake research into the project. The district council has put $20,000 into the project. A timeline for the project is yet to be established. The next step will be further consultation with the public and the trust will begin applying for funding applications. Councillor Pat McEvedy said the district council has done a good job supporting the trust, and the trust has rewarded it by coming back with a vision. $1.5m donation fails to surface for Maddie By Gabrielle Stuart THE WOMAN who made a $1.5million pledge that could help save West Melton teenager Maddie Collins’ life has gone to ground. Maddie’s family have not heard from the woman since Thursday - when The star newspaper revealed that the woman’s pledge was likely to be bigus. Maddie’s family are devastate dthe woman is unlikely to have the money. A middle-aged woman told the family she would donate the money from a $42 million inheritance, enough to pay for Maddie’s treatment for kidney failure. The woman visited the family’s home to discuss the donation and continually phones and Facebook messages them. But Maddie’s mother Sarah Manson Collins now believes the offer is false. It has distressed the family considerably. “It’s that utter sense of false hope. When we met her we thought all our stresses and worries were gone,” Mrs Manson Collins told The Star. “We thought we’ll get the
transplant, and by next year Maddie will be fighting fit and able to get on with life,” she said. Maddie, 13, has kidney failure with potentially life-threatening complications. Her family has been involved in a high profile fundraising campaign to get her a kidney transplant and follow up treatment in the United States. They visited the Baltimore hospital where the operation will take place last month and were told the cost had jumped from $350,000 to more than $700,000. About $170,000 has so far been raised for the St Margaret’s College year 9 student. The family was approached by the woman via Facebook early last month who asked to meet in person at their West Melton home to give them a cheque. The woman spent an hour at their home but didn’t have the cheque, saying she needed to organise it with the bank. Since then the woman has made many more promises to pay, which haven’t eventuated. The latest was on Wednesday morning when the woman said on Facebook Messenger she had arranged the bank transfer last Monday, but could not check it

as she said she was on holiday in Dunedin. In the message she told Mrs Manson Collins: “A transfer did go out but not too sure where. “Sorry about this mucking around it would be stressful time

“That could mean my daughter’s life,” said Mrs Manson Collins. She said the woman seemed genuine when she visited the house. She was aged in her 50s. She was completely bewildered about why the woman would do that to them, or what she was trying to achieve. The family are looking to get a kidney transplant at the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, as there is more chance of getting a donated kidney, and the treatment offered there would make it more likely Maddie’s body would accept it, even if it was not a perfect match. Maddie’s father, Adam Collins, donated one of his kidneys to her in 2012, but her body rejected it. This year Maddie was told the daily dialysis treatment she is on has put so much strain on her heart, she was at risk of a heart attack. That made the need for a kidney transplant more urgent. Attempts by The Star to contact the woman have been futile. But a family member tracked down said she had been known to have “told some whoppers” in the past. He was unaware of the $42 million inheritance.

Inquiry outcome this week By Gabrielle Stuart A JUNIOR female rugby coach stood down after she allegedly verbally and physically abused a young player will know this week if she will face a formal hearing. West Melton under-14.5s coach Amanda Tomlinson has been sidelined while the Canterbury Rugby Football Union investigates the matter. The incident happened during her team’s match against Lincoln under-14.5s on July 8. Ellesmere Rugby Sub Union president Stuart Boon said he expected the CRFU report to come back in the next couple of days, which would recommend if there would a hearing. A complaint was laid against Tomlinson by the Lincoln Rugby Club. Police are investigating but won’t say what into. Tomlinson said last week she grabbed the Lincoln player by his collar after he kicked a player from her team in the mouth during the match. FONTERRA’S BIG PLANS Fonterra has announced plans for two new cream cheese plants for its site in Darfield. A $150 million, two-stage project will see the first plant completed in 2018 with a second to follow in either 2019 or 2020. Fonterra’s director of global foodservice Grant Watson said the investment is a timely one as more and more consumers around Asia develop a preference for milkbased products. In keeping with the alpine environment Castle Hill Community Association member John Reid writes about the village’s commercial and residential development, the need for public toilets and a number of trees set to be removed Castle Hill Village has been lucky to have a good fall of snow for the school holidays. A lot of snow fights and children sliding down the hill by the water slide. Skifields are off to a good start. A number of new houses are being built in the village and the design controls result in attractive architecture which blends in with the alpine environment. The village has a very active community association which also acts as the township committee for this part of the district with whom we work closely. There is a review of our Reserves Management Plan in progress which discusses the continuing management of the village reserves and in particular its trees. One important item for consideration is the removal of Pinus contorta (lodgepole pine) that has established itself around our community hall and tennis court. A process of annual removal and re-planting has been going on for a number of years.
It has now been decided that these trees will have to be removed as part of a district-wide move to stop the spread of wilding pines. The review will decide how quickly this can be achieved. The growth of visitor traffic on the Great Alpine Highway and the growth of the mountain-biking community using the network of trails now developed around the village has meant that one public toilet is not enough.
The district council is working on the provision of three new toilets and will approach the Government for funds as part of the recent announcement of a new funding initiative for this purpose. Plans for the final stages of residential development and plans for the village’s commercial zone have been prepared and submitted to district council. The township committee wishes to have an opportunity to comment on these plans as the future village centre will be developed there and this will have a great impact on the additional amenities and services available for visitors and residents alike.

Relax and recover with hydrotherapy The hydrotherapy pool is one of the key features of the Selwyn Aquatic Centre. Maintained at a balmy 35 degrees, it is designed to be used as a gentle and effective aid for pain relief or muscle tension. It’s perfect for people rehabilitating from illness or injury, those who face challenges with their mobility, or for general well-being and relaxation. The pool measures 16mx6m, has a depth ranging from 1.2m–1.8m, has a wheelchair accessible ramp, and is supervised by lifeguards at all times. It’s recommended if you are using the hydrotherapy pool for medical reasons you check with your doctor first. You’ll need to bring drinking water with you to stay hydrated. The hydrotherapy pool is available for general use during Selwyn Aquatic Centre’s opening hours: Monday–Friday, 6am–9pm and Saturday–Sunday between 8am–8pm. On the roads this week After the weekend’s wet weather there are many new potholes on the roads. Council’s contractors are out doing repairs as quickly as possible, but we also ask residents to report potholes and any other roading issues through our Helpline 347 2800 or the Snap, Send, Solve app. Your patience and caution on the roads will be appreciated by all road users. The intersection of Hoskyns Road and Sandy Knolls Road is being upgraded and a change of priority will occur so that traffic approaching from Sandy Knolls Road will need to stop. Traffic delays may occur and detours may operate while the upgrade occurs. Construction of a right-turn bay is continuing at the intersection of Dynes Road and Springston Rolleston Road, with traffic controls in place at this location. Care is needed when driving through the site. Unsealed road maintenance will occur on Malvern Hills Road. Footpath construction will be occurring on Liffey Springs walkway. Sewer line installation work is continuing on Shands Road and Selwyn Road – traffic delays may occur due to this work.
Christchurch Southern Motorway Extension – NZTA From Monday 24 July the CSM2 project team continue to fell trees along the north-bound side of Main South Road between Weedons Ross Road and Curraghs Road. Tai Tapu – a community on the rise It takes a community with resilience, enthusiasm and energy to regroup after a disaster and find funding for new local facilities. Community efforts towards the new Rhodes Park community and sports facility and play centre in Tai Tapu are testament to this. The construction of the Rhodes Park facility is set to begin in early August and is expected to be completed by June 2018. The new play centre build is completed and running, with a bit of landscaping to finish. Selwyn District Council Property Manager John Reid says thanks to the community’s creative funding and planning approach, a new facility will replace the original community hall in the township and the sports pavilion at Rhodes Park, both of which were outdated and suffered damage in the 2010–2011 earthquakes. “I’m full of admiration for what this community has been able to achieve through the development of a shared, future-focused vision, backed up by sheer hard work,” Mr Reid says. “A number of different community groups with different views have come together to develop a solution that doesn’t replicate an outdated facility provision model, but is future-focused and based on the community’s needs.” The old hall site in the township has been retained, and the Tai Tapu Playcentre has developed a new facility there which includes a playground that the whole community can enjoy. “The new community and sports facility at Rhodes Park will be used for meetings, social events and functions as well as providing a venue for local sports groups,” says Mr Reid. The Selwyn District Council investment in the Rhodes Park facility has been complemented by funding from the Ra¯ta¯ Foundation and the Lotteries Commission as well as locally-raised funds.

ADVENTURE: Templeton Busy Bumbles holiday programme children travelled to see Alice in Wonderland in Christchurch.
Children have been keeping entertained over the school holidays by painting rocks, creating tie dyed t-shirts and building mini gingerbread houses. A line-up of fun-themed days over the past two weeks was organised by the Busy Bumbles holiday programme team. The programme covered Rolleston, Lincoln, Templeton, Leeston, Darfield and Weedons. Day trips to Christchurch ranged from going to see Alice in Wonderland at Elmwood to visiting Inflatable World in Hornby. The children also celebrated culture by dressing up for ‘American all stars day’ and Bastille Day. The busy week finished up with a “onesie” and “pyjama” day on Friday.

Don Watson Our People Don of Lincoln earns recognition Don Watson, 85, was recently recognised for 50 years of service on the Greenpark Memorial Community Centre Committee. He spoke to Georgia O’Connor-Harding How does it feel to get recognised for 50 years of service? It is a privilege to be thought of in that way as far as the district council is concerned. I was pleased to accept a nice trophy. I wasn’t expecting anything like that. You don’t do these things to be rewarded, you do it because you like it. Pretty big deal isn’t it? I suppose it is. It is one of those things when you live in a small community you do your part to play along and put something back into the community. That is one of the reasons I did that. In 2012, when I moved to the Lincoln township, I volunteered to retire from the committee and they said ‘no don’t do that’. We were in the throws of getting our replacement hall after it was damaged in the February 22, 2011, earthquake. I stayed on until it became a reality. What was it like going through the whole process of the earthquake, losing and replacing the hall? It was a big deal, we had good insurance. The hall was a brick building and it disintegrated badly in the earthquake. With the help of the district council and our little committee, we pushed ahead and eventually got what we have. The new hall is a great asset to the district and is being very well-used. Do you have any key memories of the old hall over your 50 years? In the early years of the committee, we were responsible for the entire hall ourselves. We were responsible for the fundraising and keeping it maintained. That all came at a cost. We used to run functions at the hall for the hall committee to raise funds – dances, balls and all those things in the 1960s. We used to do an annual col-
lection around the district and ask for donations towards the maintenance of the hall. It wasn’t easy for members to have to do, but we had to make sure we did it. The district council took over from the fundraising in about 1995. That took away the problem we had with fundraising, which was a big help. Is there a story behind why you decided to go on the committee? At the time, the present hall committee had been on there for a considerable amount of years and they were all getting a bit elderly. The hall committee sent a letter out to all who held meetings and used the hall. They wanted to set up a new committee and were going to retire if there wasn’t enough members showing up. At the time, I was secretary of the Tai Tapu district’s Federated Farmers. I along with a few others got voted on to where I’ve remained ever since. Tell me about your life as a farmer? We were on 90-100ha block dairy farm on Davidsons Rd. Regrettably, it was sold off in 2007 after it was in the family for more than 90 years. It gradually grew from a small unit to a large. We started off in the 1950s with 20 cows, now there are more than 1000. When we retired, we were milking more than 370 cows. We did contract with harvesting to add to our outcome. As the years progressed, we gave up our harvesting and turned it into a more straight forward dairy farm. Was there a time where you wanted to give farming up and do something else? No, I didn’t have that appeal at all. I was keen on my farming. I became a director of the local farming company, Canterbury Dairy Farmers, which processed and distributed our milk. I was

15 years on the board of directors of that company. I saw it grow from being a Canterburybased company to merging to be the sole representative of South Island dairy farmers. I was pleased to be part of that. What school did you go to? I went to Christchurch Boys’ High School. It was great – I was involved in the sports side. I learned to play tennis while at high school. I was part of the rugby teams. I played rugby for the Waihora Rugby Club and the Greenpark Tennis Club. I was the first secretary of the Greenpark Tennis Club. It was formed in about 1950 and I was there for about 12 years. After I finished playing rugby, I became

a member of the Waihora committee and was the president of the club for a year. Do you have any significant achievements that stood out for you when you were playing rugby or tennis? Nothing in the tennis line, but I played representative rugby for the Ellesmere Rugby Sub Union for several years. It was pretty competitive in those days. I was a hooker – I partially blame that for having a bad back. Tell me about your family? My wife and I have been married for 61 years. We both lived in Greenpark and you didn’t have to go far in those days – I only had a bike for a while. We met through NZ Young Farm-

ers, netball, basketball clubs and joined up at a lot of dances. There were six of us in a little group and they all finished up by marrying each other. Our eldest son is in the world of banking. Our daughter is now living in Lincoln as a registered nurse. Our youngest son was a very keen sportsman as far as rugby and tennis went. He came home to assist on the farm when he left school. He took over until he gave up in 2007 and set up a cafe business. Now he has a manufacturing polythene pipe business in Rolleston. You have been involved in a lot of organisations. Is there anything else we don’t know about? I was involved in the Lincoln Anglican Parish in a large way during my farming days. I was a member through St Mark’s Anglican Church. I still attend services where we have been for more than 60 years. I was a lay reader for 30 years. The vicar twisted my arm. I was also people’s warden, meaning I was the main go to person – if someone wanted to talk to somebody instead of talking to the vicar, they passed it on to me. I was also the chairman of the rebuild committee that rebuilt the St Stephen’s Anglican Church. The church was completed in 1992. It was rebuilt because the old one was falling a part and had been there about 120 years. Anything else? I also played indoor bowls for Greenpark. It did eventually go into recess so I went to Ladbrooks, which I am still a member and secretary of at the moment. We have managed to get by. I also play outdoor bowls here in Lincoln. I have been a member of the club for 15 years or more. When I was a few weeks off 80, it wasn’t long until I was elected president of the club. I was an 80-year-old president for a couple of years. I look back and wonder how I had time to farm and the answer was a very capable and suitable wife.

Native beetle’s mystery trip to Devon Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology (insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living things around us THE FIG longhorn beetle (xylotoles griseus) is an attractive wood-boring beetle native to New Zealand, being found on the mainland, Little Barrier Island and the Poor Knights Islands. Interestingly, in 2014, 20 specimens were found in one location in Devon, England, the first recorded outside of New Zealand. It is unknown how this flight-
less species arrived in Devon, but they emerged from holes in a recently felled fig tree. The elongated, elliptical brown beetle is 11mm long and 4mm wide with long antennae that exceed the length of the beetle itself. The beetle lives in the dead wood of a variety of species, but elm is its most commonly recorded host. Other host species include the natives kawakawa, puka and a variety of introduced species such as radiata pine, japanese honeysuckle, buddleja and willow. Adults emerge in summer and the female gnaws a hole in the bark where she lays her eggs. Larvae feed below the bark but pupate in the wood. The beetle is not considered an economic pest in New Zealand, with dead wood appearing to be their preference over live trees.

Lincoln Uni icon passes away By Ian Collins A WELL-KNOWN personality who spent 40 years at Lincoln University has passed away. Retired associate professor George Hill died last Monday at Cashmere View Hospital at the age of 80. Mr Hill was a an agronomist on the plant science staff from 1972-2012 at Lincoln University. His funeral was last Saturday at HMNZS Pegasus Naval Reserves premises in Christchurch. Mr Hill’s was a life well lived in diverse areas of service to plant science, teaching, education union affairs and the navy. Born in England, Mr Hill was brought up in Australia from a young age and graduated from the University of Western Australia. He joined the staff at Lincoln University in 1972 as an agronomist after four years working in
Papua New Guinea. Lincoln University’s big attraction for him was its use of on-farm teaching and system of farmer tutors. This is what drew him across the Tasman to New Zealand. In a parallel career, Mr Hill was an enthusiastic naval reservist. He had joined the Royal Australian Naval Reserve in 1956 as a seaman and was soon commissioned. In New Zealand, he rose to the rank of captain and in Christchurch he was the commanding officer of HMNZS Pegasus. He held significant naval decorations acknowledging his service. At Lincoln University, Mr Hill took his teaching and postgraduate supervision responsibilities very seriously and he became a respected member of the Association of University Teachers
(now the Tertiary Education Union). He had a particular interest in negotiations around conditions of employment and non-financial employment benefits. In recognition of his union service, he was made a TEU life member. Mr Hill was also an active justice of the peace, serving valuably in this role on campus. Membership of the Lincoln University Choir was a passion, too. He was also a council member of the Agronomy Society of New Zealand for more than 35 years and was elected a fellow in 1996. With professor of plant science Reinhart Langer, Mr Hill co-authored the standard plant science text Agricultural Plants, which has had several editions and translations. •Ian Collins is a heritage writer at Lincoln University

Southbridge look to make history By Gordon Findlater SOUTHBRIDGE have the opportunity to do the clean sweep for the first time in the club’s history after defeating Prebbleton 22-13 on Sunday. The win means that Southbridge retained the Murray Cooper Shield (Ellesmere’s version of the Ranfurly Shield) for the off-season. They also secured the Ellesmere Trophy for the fourth straight year after finishing top at the end of the round-robin. Earlier in the year, Southbridge won the Combined Country Cup and are now just two wins away from claiming the Coleman Shield. “I don’t know if many clubs have (won all four trophies) before. It’s a massive challenge and we’re going to find it very hard. This late in the season, it comes down to a big mental battle,” said Southbridge coach Doug Maginness. Sunday’s game also turned out to be a warm-up for this weekend’s semi-finals. With Southbridge finishing No 1 and Prebbleton No 4, it means they will meet in a semi-final at Southbridge on Saturday. “They look to be a really well trained and drilled unit. They bring a lot of passion, that’s probably the big thing I took from the game,” said Maginness. Sunday’s game against Prebbleton was initially due to be played on Saturday, but was postponed 24 hours due to flooding. Prebbleton seized the early initiative with Tim Murgatroyd

Bates swims to bronze HANNAH BATES will return from the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas with a bronze medal. Bates, 16, claimed bronze in the 100m women’s butterfly with a time of 1min 1.27sec at the weekend. She also had strong results in

Lincoln physios join forces Physiotherapists in Lincoln have joined forces and are now working together under one roof to provide a seamless health service for people living in Lincoln and the wider Selwyn community. Hollands have gone water
Superior technology is now a fixture at Holland Collision Centre in Rolleston with waterborne paints rather than toxic chemically based alternatives being used. This superior method of painting motor vehicles is possible due to a state of the art painting booth and other technologically advanced equipment imported from Italy. “A really good booth is needed when working with water borne paint so the moisture is extracted out of the paint,” explains Cameron, owner of Holland Collision Centre. Rather than drying the paint with a heater, the paint is blow dried in the booth. This results in the paint drying more quickly with great results. Waterborne paints are more sophisticated, enabling a more accurate colour match. This is especially the case with late model vehicles that have waterborne products that were applied in special factory conditions. With waterborne paints the result is enhanced paintwork that looks sharper so
when you pick up your car from Hollands, it is like driving a new car out of the yard. An added advantage of working with waterborne paints is they are safer for the environment with less potential health risks for those working with them. Spraying with water makes clean-up of the equipment used, an easier task. It is simply

washed clean using water rather than a solvent reducer as was the case in the past. Therefore, solvents are not wasted or sent for recycling and purifying which is better for the environment. While we may not be thinking about having our vehicle painted, the slippery wet and icy conditions at this time of year can make stopping in time that little bit harder and accidents do occur. Motor Fest coming to Selwyn Motor enthusiast, John Winchester wanted to do something to support the Selwyn community. After getting together with other local motoring stalwarts his initial ideas were soon shaped into what may become one of Canterbury’s largest motor festivals. With motors the common theme for those involved, Selwyn Motor Fest will provide something of interest for everyone. “Whether it’s an enthusiast’s car or motorbike, truck, tractor, steam engine, stock car, hot rod, muscle car, classic or vintage vehicle, if it has a motor we want it at the show,” says Selwyn District Councillor, Craig Watson who enthusiastically joined the organising team. Craig says they are calling it a motor fest as the plan is to have a diverse display of motor related exhibits including army memorabilia, motor racing, hot rodding, the fire service, army and police. The group want this to be a really cool motor festival that embraces motoring and motors over the years and they plan to run it annually so people can show off their big toys and families can have a really fun day out. It is hoped to have over 1,000 show exhibits and three to four times that in people attending the day. The motor fest will also provide an opportunity for fundraising. This year, money raised will go to St John to assist funding of the new station and ambulances based in Rolleston as well as the other services they provide.

Planning for the very first Selwyn Motor Fest, which is scheduled for later this year, is well underway. Already machinery is preparing the grounds on land that runs off the Broadlands Drive extension opposite Rolleston College. Members of the Rolleston and Districts Lions Club who have the experience will be supporting the event with event management systems including traffic planning to ensure a well-run, successful motor fest with a percentage of funds raised contributed to their in-need social support programmes. While exhibitors will be charged an entry fee and there will be a gate entry charge, the aim is to keep the cost as low as possible so it is an affordable day out and one that becomes a regular annual family event. Flowers that are as sweet as can be he offers are great for picking, reminding me that “Sweet peas are the ultimate ‘cut and come again’ flower”, meaning that the more you pick from the flower stems, the more they will produce. He goes on to mention: “The ones with the larger, frilly flowers have longer stems than, say, some of the smaller flowered forms with the strongest scent.” His most highly-scented varieties are Original, High Scent, More Scent, and High Society.
Rachel Vogan sings the praises of sweet peas – tough little bloomers that can light up the garden year-round WHENEVER I’M asked what my favorite flower is, I struggle to answer as I have so many. It’s like asking which is your favourite child – how do you choose? My top picks always include dahlias, gladioli, daphne, and daisies; I am never without roses or hellebores no matter where I live, and every year without fail I grow sweet peas anywhere I can find room to squeeze them in. I’m not sure where my devotion to them came from – my uncle Teddy used to grow them in French Farm in the 1970s, so it may have been from there, although I have always loved any flower I can pick for a posy, and have a special affection for any bloom that will give someone joy when they’re presented with it. New Zealand has a strong history with sweet peas, both in terms of seed production for English and European seed catalogues and sweet pea breeding. Dr Keith Hammett is the godfather of sweet pea breeding; he has a passion for these blooms that just captivates you. Keith’s interest in the sweet pea started off as a teenager, when his uncle decided he wanted to separate his flower and vegetable garden, doing so by planting a

dividing row of sweet peas. To hear Keith recall it, it was love at first sight. This love has only continued throughout the years, as sweet pea varieties bearing the Hammett name are now sold all over New Zealand and around the world. I first met him about 20 years ago, and was struck by his contagious keenness for both breeding plants and creating cultivars that fitted the local New Zealand climate. I couldn’t quite keep up with all the different characteristics he was producing and aiming for, but was mesmerised and wanted to soak up what I could, knowing that I
could stand to learn a lot from him. So I sat and listened, barely saying a word! Fast forward a few decades and every year I plant out dozens of his varieties. My go-to is his High Scent as it has got the most magnificent fragrance, and beautiful flowers with an antique cream base and delicate violet edging on each petal. One of its best features is probably its prolific blooming capacity, as once it starts flowering in November I can be picking it continuously until the end of March, as long as I pick off any spent flower seed pods along the way, and make sure to fertilise and water them regularly. Like me,
they love their tucker! For the show bench I always plant Piggy Sue (not to be confused with Peggy Sue), named after a pig rescued from farrowing stalls. Its colouring is a pink flush against a cream ground, with young flowers that often resemble a pink picotee when they first open. Last year I planted Pink Nines for the first time, which has masses of flowers on each stem – up to nine on each. Paradox has an intense, rich, violet-blue flower but has lost its ability to climb, so is one you would plant as a ground cover or for use in hanging baskets. Keith says all the sweet peas
• Plenty of sun needs to be on the menu – while sweet peas will bloom in half-day sun, the results are always best when they are planted somewhere that gets rays all day. • Sow seeds now or look for seedlings, as they are in the shops throughout August, September and into October. • Seeds can be sown directly where they are to flower provided the soil is well drained, in a sunny position, and you are able to protect against slugs, snails and maybe birds. • If sown into pots for planting out later, seeds do not need to be grown inside or in the glasshouse, simply sow and place outside in full light. • Provide support – sweet peas are a tumbling vine and need something to cling to when climbing. This support can be as simple as bamboo canes, wigwams, or old bike wheels, while netting against a fence or wall is a popular choice.

Hi I have a lemon tree and was wondering what are good companion plants for them?
Answer: Companion planting for lemons isn’t something that gets asked about very often, so there isn’t a set answer exactly. Here is some information that would be of use if you are wanting to plant something around your lemons. Lemons are shallow rooting, need good drainage in winter, a cool root zone with plenty of water in the summer, and an acid soil ph. This means that they do not like their roots cultivated to plant any annual type plants. Therefore more permanent plants around and underneath the lemon would be OK. Ground cover plants would be suitable (this could include perennial herbs like mint, rosemary or thyme). These would help to keep the root zone cool in summer. As far as we are aware, there are not any plants that would give lemons protection from pest and diseases that are considered companion plants. That is to say that they not exist only that we wouldn’t be able to suggest any. A garden centre expert may be able to help more with this is you need. We hope this helps.

Fix those minor defects Start out front, cleaning, clearing and decluttering the yard to make a good impression on buyers. It’s a rare house that doesn’t have defects. Even newly renovated ones can have features that detract for buyers. But there are ways for sellers to deflect attention from them without pretending they’re not there. The three main ways of dealing with defects are: 1. Fix them. 2. Draw the eye away from them. 3. Use them as a selling point. Simple defects can be fixed easily. Start out front. Overgrown bushes can be trimmed, or replaced with a few matching plants, old fences and front doors can be painted or stained, and the paths cleaned. Do this even if a property is a do-up. You want to give the impression that buyers can move into the house and chip away at the work in their own time If you have time and money, paint sills and eaves using accents. Inside, the first thing buyers see is the hallway, which can be brightened up with a lick of paint. The neutral paint trick can also be used to paint over dated wallpaper, completely changing the look and feel of a tired house. Bathrooms and kitchens are important to buyers, and the eye settles on vanities and benches. These can be resurfaced relatively quickly to give a modern look.
If the seller can’t repaint or tile the bathroom bring in high quality matching towels, which become a feature in the room and draw the eye from the less than desirable walls and features. Nice vases and flowers will do the same. Replacing handles and knobs to draw attention away from the units themselves. This reduces the number of “I have to do this” thoughts in potential buyers’ minds. Drawing the eye away from a multitude of sins is exactly the thing to do. If you see an empty house the eye always goes to marks on the carpet and walls and this will lower the price expectation.” Drawing the eye to the furniture and furnishings, creates better flow, and de cluttering makes buyers feel the home would be a nice place to live in. The other way to handle the property’s defects is to raise them with the buyer before they see them. If the carpet is bad, for example, you can say: “Hey, they were going to replace the carpet but they decided to leave it to you to choose a new carpet and priced it accordingly.” Finally, good old fashioned elbow grease is essential in all properties to remove those sins that are simply cleanable.

Hannah Bates, a 16 year old girl from Lincoln left last week to go the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas. Harcourts Rolleston office is her principle sponsor and sponsored her to go initially in April to the Australian Age Group Swimming Championships in Brisbane where she won a gold medal in the 400 metre individual medley and silver in the 200 metre individual medley. As a result of these successes, Hannah was selected to go the Commonwealth Youth Games and the Harcourts Rolleston office is once again her principle sponsor donating $2,500. She is part of a 34 strong team from NZ and is 1 of 2 South Islanders in this team. Hannah will compete in 5 events.
